Float Therapy
Salt float therapy, also known as restricted environmental stimulation therapy (REST) or sensory deprivation, offers various mental and physical benefits by promoting deep relaxation through weightlessness and minimal external stimuli. ReCoop Cape Cod offers the only salt float therapy on Cape Cod.
How Float Therapy Works
Float therapy offers powerful mental and physical benefits by guiding the body into deep relaxation through sensory deprivation. By reducing external stimuli, float therapy helps calm the nervous system, ease stress and pain, and support overall recovery and well-being.
Float therapy—also known as REST (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy)—involves floating effortlessly in a dark, quiet tank filled with skin-temperature water and a high concentration of Epsom salt (Epsom salt is a form of magnesium known as magnesium sulfate). This creates a zero-gravity environment that allows both the mind and body to relax, reset, and recover fully.
Why is Magnesium Important to the Body?
Magnesium is essential for the body because it supports nerve and muscle function, promotes heart health, helps produce energy, and plays a key role in relaxation, sleep, and overall wellness.
Mental & Emotional Benefits
Stress & Anxiety Reduction
Deep relaxation lowers cortisol (the body’s primary stress hormone), helping to reduce anxiety, tension, and symptoms of depression.Improved Mood & Mental Clarity
With fewer sensory distractions, the brain can reset—enhancing focus, mental clarity, and overall emotional balance.Enhanced Creativity
Quieting external input allows space for imagination and problem-solving, often leading to increased creativity and fresh ideas.Deeper Meditative States
Floating encourages brainwave shifts into alpha, theta, and delta states, similar to deep meditation and restorative sleep.
Physical Benefits
Pain Relief
The weightless, zero-gravity environment relieves pressure on muscles and joints, helping reduce chronic pain, muscle soreness, arthritis, and fibromyalgia discomfort.Faster Recovery
Float therapy helps decrease inflammation and muscle tension, supporting quicker physical recovery—especially beneficial for athletes and active individuals.Improved Circulation
Reduced gravitational pressure and gentle vasodilation improve blood flow and oxygen delivery throughout the body.Lower Blood Pressure
Activating the parasympathetic nervous system promotes relaxation, helping to lower heart rate and blood pressure.Magnesium Absorption
Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) supports muscle relaxation, reduces inflammation, aids detoxification, and helps replenish magnesium levels.
Recent Treatments and Personal Care Considerations
To ensure both your comfort and proper sanitation of the float environment:
Hair Treatments
Avoid floating if hair dye is still bleeding (wait until fully rinsed out).
You should wait two weeks after dyeing your hair or 7 washes.
Avoid floating for several weeks after keratin treatments.
Skin Treatments
Do not shave or wax within 24 hours prior to your session.
Wait 48 hours to 1 week after spray tanning, or until no color residue remains.Menstruation
Internal protection (tampon or menstrual cup) is required, or reschedule your session.Mobility Requirements
You must be able to safely enter and exit the float tank independently or bring assistance.
